Frequently Asked Questions
What are STAR Assessments?
Star Assessments are short tests that provide parents with personalized learning data for each student. They are published by Renaissance Learning, Inc.
Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust in difficulty to each answer students provide. This helps parents get the best data to help students in the shortest amount of testing time (about one-third of the time other tests require).
Star Assessments are not a “pass/fail” type of assessment, nor are they assessments for which students can study. Instead, Star assesses students’ early literacy, reading, and/or math ability, providing parents with data and insights to determine which skills your child knows and which skills they are ready to learn next, and identify which students may need additional support.
How do I know if STAR Assessments are approved by Florida for PEP?
According to the PEP Family Handbook, “PEP students are required to annually take a nationally norm-referenced test identified by the FLDOE or the statewide assessment described in Florida Statute 1008.22 and submit the results to Step Up For Students before receiving scholarship funding or switching to a different scholarship program.
More information, including a list of approved assessments, is available from the Department of Education.” You can find Renaissance STAR Assessments on the FLDOE list here.
Why choose STAR Assessments over other testing options?
There are many options out there, but in researching the right product to offer parents, I wanted to find a testing solution that provides ease of use, online testing with parent proctoring, short test times, and the ability to provide testing at a reasonable cost. After researching and asking many questions in parent forums, I found that the STAR Assessment meets all of these criteria. As a PEP parent myself, I wanted something that offers the flexibility to serve the needs of all homeschooling parents: those who want the least amount of testing possible, as well as those who want to use testing year-round.
Can my child take the STAR Assessment online?
Yes! Your child can take the STAR Assessment at home or anywhere they have a reliable internet connection.
What devices are compatible with STAR Assessments?
Students can use computers, laptops, tablets (7 inches or larger), and smartphones for the STAR Assessment, as long as the device is connected to the internet and runs a compatible web browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Chromebooks are also fully compatible with all Renaissance products, including the STAR Assessment.
How long do STAR Assessments take?
STAR tests are designed to be as efficient as possible. On average, students will complete the STAR Math test in about 20 minutes, the STAR Reading test in about 15 minutes, the STAR Early Literacy test in 15–20 minutes, and the STAR Reading Spanish test in about 10 minutes. However, some students may require more time.
How do I set up my PEP student to take the STAR Assessment?
First, reserve the funds in EMA. The next step depends on which testing option you choose:
One-time Testing: I will approve the funds and email you a link to schedule your assessment. Once you schedule your assessment, you’ll receive a second email containing the teacher and student login infomation 24 hours before your testing window.
Year-Round Testing: I will approve the funds and send you an email containing your teacher and student login information.
How much does STAR Testing cost?
